All OCIT texts and documents are written in German. On this site you can find only a short overview. For further questions please use the forum.

OCIT stands for "Open Communication Interface for Road Traffic Control Systems". As you may know the OCIT standardization began 1999 as an initiative between manufacturers and German cities. OCIT is a non profit organisation.

The OCIT standardization is going to standardize interfaces (protocols, functions and data). There is no intention to build up standardized units, cabinets or systems (like the US NEMA). The focus of the work is the technology of traffic engineering in Germany, German speaking countries and others, which use this technology too. This is why all specifications are in German language. Transfering the OCIT specifications to an common European traffic engineering level would be a very long-term affair. Most likely this is not at all feasible.

The basic OCIT architecture differentiate between this areas:

  • OCIT-Instations, are interfaces of the traffic management area. Look to OTEC for further information.

  • OCIT-Outstations, are interfaces between the traffic management system (central unit) and field equipment, like traffic controllers, strategic traffic measurement, variable traffic signs and others. Actually definitions have been made for traffic controllers only.

  • OCIT-Profiles, definitions to the data communication (fixed lines, ISDN, GSM, Ethernet)

  • OCIT-LED, electrical interface definitions for LED-signal heads.

Tthe OCIT-Outstations Traffic Controller specification consists of:

  • the system description (paper),

  • protocol (paper and c-code; it is the first protocol for traffic applications which uses TCP/IP in the field area; OCIT protocol is
    in OSI layers 7 - 5),

  • basic definitions suitable for use in interfaces of every kind of field equipment (paper and XML-data description),

  • definition for traffic controllers (paper and XML-data description)

Licenses for OCIT-Outstations Standards are sold by the ODG (OCIT-Developer Group, Members are the companies Dambach, Siemens, Signalbau Huber, STOYE and Stührenberg). The licence fee for these definitions is between 2.500 and 40.00 Euro once (c-code and XML included). For a detailed impression it would be helpful to translate the papers of "OCIT- Outstations Version 2.0 Ausgabe 02 für Lichtsignalsteuergeräte" (ODG-download area).

If you are interested in a license, contact the ODG .
